149. Parenting Imperfectly; Guilt Free Zone

podcast Sep 07, 2023

Today's episode is all about a topic that's near and dear to my heart - the guilt that often accompanies us on this incredible journey of parenting that we weren’t prepared for. When you are parenting a child with autism, this journey may take on unique dimensions.

Guilt tends to creep in when we dwell on our perceived shortcomings. It can manifest in various ways:

We all make mistakes, but sometimes, we dwell on them for too long and beat ourselves up for not being perfect. I'm not doing enough, taking time for myself is selfish, comparing your child's progress, self-blame, and constantly second-guessing your choices.

Whether your child is neurotypical or on the spectrum, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to being a perfect parent. We all have moments when we wish we had handled a situation differently or said something else. The key is to recognize that these moments don't define us as parents.

Let's embrace the quirks, the challenges, and the extraordinary love that defines our lives. After all, it's in these shared experiences that we find strength, compassion, and the reassurance that we're part of a community that truly understands.

Together, we can overcome challenges and create a brighter future for our families.
