121. What We Do with What We Hear

podcast Jan 26, 2023

Think about all of the sounds in the world, not just speech, but the sounds of the environment, the birds, the crying baby, the motorcycle, the garage door opening, and the wind, those sounds all have to be filtered throughout our day and that doesn’t even include our words or people talking to you.

Some of our kids struggle to take in information verbally even though they don’t have a hearing problem. They have trouble processing what is said to them and remembering what they hear which can lead to trouble learning to read and expressing themselves because they confuse the sounds of different words.

Sound affects the nervous system in a fundamental way and can put us on alert and in fight-and-flight mode very easily.

The second part is how our brains understand speech and this is the reason some of our children have challenges understanding what people are saying, which has nothing to do with their intelligence or hearing deficits.

There are four auditory processing skills that can have an impact on learning and communicating with others that fall into the auditory processing disorder.

So while they have normal hearing, for some reason they have a deficit in basic skills for decoding language that most kids develop naturally.  I dive into these four processing skills in depth in this episode as well as give you some tangible things that you can practice with your child to help support them if they struggle in any of these areas.
