Recognizing the Unique Strengths of Autism: Jordan's Story
There are so many discussions on the deficits that come along with autism, so I decided I want to shine a light on some of the incredible traits that my son Jordan has. These are traits that not only serve him well but also remind me daily of the unique strengths that come with his autism.
Jordan is 28 and autistic and I am his guardian and primary caregiver. As moms raising children on the autism spectrum, I want to emphasize the importance of recognizing the positive aspects of autism in your child.Â
One of Jordan’s standout abilities is his incredible memory. He remembers intricate details, facts, and places with an accuracy that leaves those who know him in awe. This is due to his heightened attention to detail, a common trait among autistic individuals. Jordan can recall events from years ago as if they happened yesterday. This ability isn't just impressive—it's a superpower in a world where details matter.
Another fascinating aspect of his autism is his heightened sensory awareness. Autistic individuals often experience the world in a unique way, and for Jordan, this means a more vibrant, intense sensory life. He notices the subtle details that many of us might overlook. Whether it's the texture of a surface, the sound of a bird in the distance, or a smell that would otherwise go unnoticed.  Jordan’s world is full of sensory experiences that bring out curiosity and wonder. This heightened awareness allows him to fully immerse himself in his surroundings and appreciate things that most of us let pass us by.
Recently, there was a concern about bullying toward Jordan. With all the confidence I have, I said I don't know that Jordan understands bullying. Let that sink in. While Jordan's ability to interact socially is a challenge, he has never paid attention to or cared what other people think.
Can you imagine living life without worrying about the opinions of others? It's a kind of freedom that many of us strive for.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Jordan's life is his freedom from the typical worries that many of us face daily. He isn't concerned about the price of groceries, the rising cost of housing, or the complexities of politics. These are the things that often weigh heavily on our minds, causing stress and anxiety. He is taken care of and doesn't have to shoulder these burdens.
Imagine the blessing of not having to worry about these worldly matters. Jordan's lack of concern for these issues allows him to live in the moment and enjoy life without the burden of such stresses. This perspective can be a reminder for us to sometimes let go of our worries and focus on the present.
Yes, there are challenges, but I believe it is essential to recognize and celebrate the positive traits of autism that make your child who they are. While there are many challenges they face, acknowledging their unique strengths is equally important.
Through greater awareness and understanding of the positive aspects of autism, we can break down barriers and promote acceptance and appreciation for everyone's unique strengths. Let’s work together to create a world where everyone has an opportunity to reach their full potential.
Until next time, keep celebrating those small victories and unique traits in your children. They are what make them, and us, truly unique.
